Meryl Streep as Aslan Is Causing Exactly the Kind of Narnia Argument C.S. Lewis Probably Expected Art to Cause

Greta Gerwig’s decision to cast Streep as the voice of Aslan has triggered debates about faithfulness, symbolism and what adaptation owes the imagination of its readers.

Aslan has always carried more weight than an ordinary fictional character. C.S. Lewis built the lion as the moral and spiritual center of Narnia, a figure whose identity is not hidden from readers familiar with Christianity. That makes every adaptation choice feel unusually consequential.

Greta Gerwig has now confirmed that Meryl Streep will voice Aslan in her coming Netflix adaptation, ending more than a year of speculation. The first reported images also suggest a visually unconventional lion, including references to David Bowie in the design.

Predictably, the casting has produced immediate argument. Some readers view the decision as a betrayal of Aslan’s male identity and the Christological symbolism embedded in the books. Others see voice casting as a creative choice that does not necessarily rewrite the character’s identity, especially since the film still reportedly refers to Aslan as “he.”

The intensity of the reaction reveals the unusual position of “The Chronicles of Narnia.” These are not merely beloved fantasy books. For generations of Christians, they functioned as imaginative theology. Children encountered sacrifice, resurrection, temptation, creation and divine presence through stories before they possessed formal language for those doctrines.

That creates a sense of ownership adaptation rarely encounters. Change a superhero costume and fans debate aesthetics. Change Aslan and some readers believe you have changed something about the spiritual architecture of the story.

Yet adaptation is always interpretation. Lewis himself was translating Christian imagination into fantasy rather than reproducing biblical scenes directly. Gerwig is now translating Lewis into cinema for another generation. The question is not whether interpretation occurs. It is whether the interpretation understands what is load-bearing.

Streep’s casting may ultimately prove inspired, distracting or merely different. Nobody knows yet. What is already clear is that Narnia still matters enough to provoke serious cultural argument about symbolism in a media environment supposedly uninterested in theology.

That alone is remarkable. A lion created in the middle of the 20th century is still forcing mainstream film audiences to debate the nature of representation, incarnation and fidelity. Whatever Gerwig does with Aslan, the conversation demonstrates that Lewis’s imagination remains very much alive.
